Listening to stations
Different stations offer several different stream formats. This includes MP3/M3U (MPEG format and playlist), PLS (multimedia playlist), SMIL (multimedia file), WMA/ASX (a Windows format), and RealMedia (a RealPlayer format). If you don't have a client installed that can play the stream format provided by a station, you won't be able to listen to that station's stream.
The following clients can play different subsets of the formats available:
- RealPlayer - cannot play WMA/ASX
- VLC - cannot play SMIL
- Winamp - cannot play SMIL or WMA/ASX
- Windows Media - cannot play RealMedia or SMIL
Some stations stream only within a web page. Others block requests that don't originate from their own site: this means that the Listen link will fail. To get around this problem, copy the link address and open it directly from the compatible client (usually with File > Open or File > Play).
